A simple approach to integrate the ecotoxicological and chemical data for the establishment of environmental risk levels BABT
Cesar,Augusto; Abessa,Denis Moledo de Souza; Pereira,Camilo Dias Seabra; Santos,Aldo Ramos; Fernández,Nuria; Choueri,Rodrigo Brasil; DelValls,Tomas Angel.
In this work, multivariate and numeric methods were used to integrate the chemical and ecotoxicological data obtained for the sediments from the Santos Estuarine System, and for the vicinity of the discharges of the Submarine Sewage Outfall of Santos, in order to establish more accurately the environmental risks, identify the priority areas and thus provide guidance to control the programs and public policies. For both the datasets, the concentrations which exceeded numeric sediment guidelines tended to be associated to toxicity. For the estuary, this trend was corroborated by the correlations between the toxicity and Cu and PAHs levels, whereas for the sewage outfall region, this was observed through the correlation between the toxicity and Hg contents....

A simple method to estimate spatial complexity in aquatic plants BABT
Dibble,Eric David; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
We used a computerized approach to measure spatial complexity for the structural habitat provided by eight aquatic plant species collected from backwater lagoons located in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. The plant species were: Cabomba furcata Schult. and Schult.f., Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth (stems and roots), Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, Egeria najas Planchon, Heteranthera cf. zosterifolia, Potamogeton cf pusillus, Utricularia foliosa L., and Nymphaea amazonum Mart. and Zucc. The upper 0.5 m length of the terminal stems was quantified for complexity. Mean frequency and length of the interstices were significantly different among plant species. Spatial complexity varied (F = 17.30; p < 0.0001) among the different plant species...

A simplified model for A. Niger FS3 growth during phytase formation in solid State fermentation BABT
Spier,Michele Rigon; Letti,Luiz Alberto Junior; Woiciechowski,Adenise Lorenci; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo.
A simplified model to describe fungal growth during citric pulp fermentation for phytase production was described for the first time. Experimental data for biomass growth were adjusted to classical mathematical growth models (Monod and Logistic). The Monod model predictions showed good agreement with the experimental results for biomass concentration during 96 hours of fermentation. Parameters such as yield of biomass from oxygen (Y X/O), maintenance coefficient (m) and specific growth rate (µ) were compared showing a good correlation between the data and the model. An alternative method for biomass determination in this process was developed since a great correlation was found between biomass growth and enzyme formation.

Abiotic factors influencing tropical dry forests regeneration BABT
Ceccon,Eliane; Huante,Pilar; Rincón,Emanuel.
Tropical dry forests represent nearly half the tropical forests in the world and are the ecosystems registering the greatest deterioration from the anthropogenic exploitation of the land. This paper presents a review on the dynamics of tropical dry forests regeneration and the main abiotic factors influencing this regeneration, such as seasonal nature, soil fertility and humidity, and natural and anthropic disturbances. The main purpose is to clearly understand an important part of TDF succession dynamics.

Abiotic variables in littoral-limnetic gradient of an oxbow lake of Mogi-Guaçu River floodplain, Southeastern, Brazil BABT
Taniguchi,Glória Massae; Bicudo,Denise de Campos; Sennab,Pedro Américo Cabral.
The present study aimed to analyse the abiotic characteristics spatial variability in the littoral-limnetic gradient of the Diogo Pond, Mogi-Guaçu River floodplain, as well as evaluating the hydrological influence on the spatial gradient. During the hydrological cycle, four field trips (high water, flood, low water, and drought) were carried out at three sampling stations: littoral, interface, and limnetic region. Analysis of physical and chemical variables allowed to conclude that the time scale established by the hydrological cycle was the main forcing function over the limnological variability of the Diogo Pond. The relative spatial scale related to littoral-limnetic gradient contributed secondarily to the abiotic variability. Littoral was characterized...

Abnormal spindles in second meiosis in canola (Brassica napus and Brassica campestris) BABT
Souza,Alice Maria de; Pagliarini,Maria Suely; Carraro,Ivo Marcos.
Studies were carried out on the occurrence of abnormal spindles in the second meiotic division in some canola cultivars recently introduced in Brazil. Fusion of spindles was observed in metaphase II rejoining the two sets of chromosomes segregated in anaphase I and also sequential and tripolar spindles were discovered rejoining two sets of chromatids segregated in anaphase II. The frequency of cells with abnormal spindles ranged from 3.18 to 8.10%. The results suggested that this abnormality was caused by environmental stress that affected the plants during the blooming period.

Absorbed dose measurements using TLDS in biological samples from beta radiation BABT
Manzoli,José Eduardo; Carvalho,Valdir de Souza; Cerqueira,Eliomar Jacinto Gomes de.
Irradiation of samples in peculiar experimental apparatus, subject to radiation spread, requires a special evaluation of absorbed dose implanted to the sample. Indirect calibration of the irradiation source, obtained in a different apparatus, and the spread, usually of very difficult theoretical evaluation, can cause very serious measurement errors, sometimes reaching 50%. In this work, the procedure for dose evaluation in an apparatus for beta irradiation of samples, usually biological ones,is presented, making use of calibration curves, obtained by irradiation in advance of thermoluminescent detectors in air, and so irradiating them in the same position of the sample. An application in blood sample irradiation is also presented.

Acetylsalicylic acid and morphology of red blood cells BABT
Frydman,Jacques Natan Grinapel; Fonseca,Adenilson de Souza da; Rocha,Vanessa Câmara da; Benarroz,Monica Oliveira; Rocha,Gabrielle de Souza; Pereira,Marcia de Oliveira; Pereira,Mario José; Medeiros,Aldo Cunha; Bernardo-Filho,Mario.
This work evaluated the effect of in vitro and in vivo treatment with ASA on the morphology of the red blood cells. Blood samples or Wistar rats were treated with ASA for one hour. Blood samples or animals treated with saline were used as control group. Blood smears were prepared, fixed, stained and the qualitative and quantitative morphology of red blood cells were evaluated under optical microscopy. Data showed that the in vitro treatment for one hour with ASA at higher dose used significantly (p<0.05) modified the perimeter/area ratio of the red blood cells. No morphological alterations were obtained with the in vivo treatment. ASA use at highest doses could interfere on shape of red blood cells.

Achene dimorphism in Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) as determined by germination test BABT
Amaral,Adriana; Takaki,Massanori.
The germination of achenes of Bidens pilosa L. was analyzed during the life span of the mother plant. Decrease in the range of achene size was monitored until the senescence of the mother plant when the shortest achenes were harvested. The analysis of the germination percentage confirmed the presence of two distinct classes, formerly defined as short and long ones. Because length can not be used for the separation of those classes, the morphological characteristics of the tegument, specially of the ornament must be used for separation of the achenes with verrucose tegument (formerly named as short achenes) and achenes without ornament of the tegument (formerly named as long achenes). The achenes with verrucose tegument presented dormancy and light...
